Run X11 Linux Apps over SSH to a Mac

So there is some software on my linux desktop that I wanted to run on my Macbook from time to time. VNC worked, but it wasn't quite as fast as I liked. I could have got the apps running natively on the mac, but I like the Ubuntu Desktop and like to use it also for files and work with Linux tools with the files on that machine. I found a way that was a little cleaner for me. It requires X11 forwarding over ssh. This allows you to execute an x11 program over ssh to another box. The application that is on your linux box will run on your Mac.

(This assumes you are running Ubuntu)
1. On your linux box make sure you have ssh installed. (sudo apt-get install openssh)
2. Sudo gedit /etc/ssh/sshd_conf
3 Add "X11Forwarding yes" (may already be there, if not add and save).
4. Restart SSH (sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart)
5. On your Macintosh open /Applications/Utilities/X11.app (may have to install it from OS X CD if not installed.
6. Open xterm (should open by default)
7. Type at the prompt: ssh -X username@host /path/to/app (username is the username on the linux box, host is the ip or hostname of the computer you are ssh'ing into and /path/to/app is the path to the application you are trying to run from your linux box to your mac. For example, the picture below shows me running /usr/bin/gnome-session, and a few other mac apps.)

Youth Lifeline Red Carpet Event

The Youth Lifeline Foundation is a non-profit, organization that harnesses the powerful influence of celebrity athletes, entertainers and business professionals to teach youth valuable life skills necessary to become more productive individuals.

The company I work for does website development and some tech work for them. Last night they had an event to raise money, and thank some of the volunteer force behind their organization. My company award an outstanding Sponsorship award. Here are some pics from last night.:

As you may know I've tried to not want the iPhone too much because of it's price, but it's utility seemed off the charts for what I do! My boss decided it would be a great tool for me in the field (and it was definitely a moral booster! I hope it makes me more productive by being able to lookup maps, having web access to lookup information, and email right at my fingertips. The Edge network is actually faster than I thought it would be. I'm getting about 185kbps/sec. Here's a screenshot of that.

I was using Google Trends and I thought it would be interesting to look at the upcoming 2008 Presidential election. So I thought I would pit 5 republicans against each other, and 5 democrats again each other, and two from both camps against each other. Here's are google trends results:

Man, I am not a Republican by any sense of the imagination, but I have to give credit where credit is due. This guy is probably one of the smartest people running for president. If I wasn't support Barack Obama, I might have to check this Republican out.

Who is this republican? Ron Paul. I noticed as I was driving to work on Friday, two sheets draped across two over passes on I-270 in St. Louis Missouri. While I didn't have time to stop and get pictures I took the message and decided to read up on this figure, and the guy is very interesting.While I have mentioned his name, and shown video's before of him, I thought I would post another video from him on the Bill Maher's HBO program.

Last weekend my father his wife, and Richard Sinclair participated in the Relay for Life, fund raiser for cancer patients and survivors.

After much headache, and at the recommendation of the the company I work for, I took the Microsoft Small Business Specialist exam. After passing I am considered a "Microsoft Certified Professional" with an emphasis on Small Businesses that use Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition. This also means that our company keeps our "Microsoft Partnership" and I hope this validates some of the technical skills I have proven to have.

I went ahead and added the neat little logos to my education page on the right hand side just for bragging rights. I once thought that the exams were blow-offs, but I have a new found respect for people who have achieved this type of certification. It may be a little weird carrying around a Macintosh and saying, "I'm a Microsoft Certified Professional!" lol

Thanks to those who encouraged me, and to everyone at CIO Services who helped me by giving me the tools and funding to do so.

Moving out

So it's almost official. I've given the deposit and come the first of June I will be moving to Missouri. This is a big change for me, but hopefully one for the better. I found a nice little apartment with 2 pools, 2 ponds, a hot tub, 24 hour fitness center, and in South County. It's still technically in St. Louis but about 20-30 minutes south.

Some say I never write blog entries anymore, so I thought I give a little update on what's going on in my soap opera life.

First and foremost dARLA and I broke up. It's still a little of a tender subject, but I wish her the best and will always love her. I will miss her family, the VW camping trips, the farm, and dAJHA. And if you read this: You're an amazing girl, I wish you all the best.

I am sure some will ask if I am going to be dating anyone? I am gonna stay single for a little while I think. My cousin keeps telling me single is the only way to go. And you kinda have to do that whole getting to know you dating stuff. UGH! You never know, though. For once in my life, I am just "rolling with it." Not trying to anticipate what my next move is. I don't have a next move or a first move, I'm just going to see what life throws at me :).

On a much brighter note, I'm pretty excited to be going to a Billy Joel Concert at Scott Trade Center tomorrow. I got lucky and found a classified listing on craigslist that was for two tickets, and ended up being within my budget. Billy Joel is one of my favorite artists. I just hope he doesn't disappoint me. I even was able to talk someone into going with me. It should be a blast, and hopefully I will be able to post pictures Thursday.

I'm still singing with the K.C. Community Choir. We have our last concert on May 3rd at 7p at Kaskaskia Community College. Everyone is invited to come out, I would love to see some familiar faces in the croud. We had our last concert last week, and I was so surprised to see my Aunt Gene, Uncle Steve, Grandma and Grandpa (Chuck) all in the crowd. Thank you all for coming.

I am taking a Microsoft Certification exam this week, which I am very nervous about! With a little luck and a lot of studying, I will be a "Microsoft Certified Small Business Specialist." Hopefully I will pass it, and not have to retake it. It's a hard test I hear so pray for me :).

Work is keeping me pretty busy, and I am trying to get back home to Salem as often as I can. I really miss the people in the town. I was born and raised there, and as bad as it seems I kinda miss it. I dont know if I could move back or not. There's not that many I.T. opportunities for me; especially ones making what I currently make. But you never know. Maybe someday?

Obama Announces White House bid in Springfield

dARLA, my wonder girlfriend and I, last Saturday traveled to Springfield, IL., to watch the Senator Barack Obama announce his intention to run for the President in 2008. It was a very cold morning with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees. Over 17,000 people showed up to watch this "gangly senator" profess his passion, and his view on America's future. dARLA snapped some pictures, as did I, and have uploaded them for you to view.

Security was everywhere. Armed guards were on roof tops, protesters marching their cause. Senator Dick Derbin introduced Obama, and Gov. Rod Blajoevich who was booed! I encourage you to view the speech!

I leave you with a portion of his speech which I hope you reflect upon.

"All of us know what those challenges are today - a war with no end, a dependence on oil that threatens our future, schools where too many children aren't learning, and families struggling paycheck to paycheck despite working as hard as they can. I have added some new features to the site, and thought I would let everyone know about them.

The first is the menu at the top of the site, which allows you to see services which I subscribed to such as Myspace, Digg, Youtube, etc. These Web 2.0 sites are interactive and are in the social networking realm. You get my personal pages on these services. I've also added a "Friends and Family" section, which allows me to link to your personal websites. If you would like to me to add you, and you are considered a friend or family, shoot me an email and give me your website address, or just post a comment to this blog entry.

The second new feature is the ability to subscribe to this site, and syndicate it via Google Reader, MY Yahoo, and various other news sites. If you have a Google account for example you can subscribe to my site, and add it to your personal news section. I've added a bunch of sites which allow you to syndicate my site to. You no longer have to come to this website to read the new blog entries, you can know use any RSS Reader.

I've also added the "My Dugg Stories" section which allows you to see stories I think are interesting on www.digg.com.

I've also added the "Picture of the Week". If you would like a picture posted, email it to me.

Third I would like to start a feature where I answer questions posted by the readers. Ever wanted to get my opinion on something? Have a computer question? Would you like a recommendation on technology or software? Got an idea you'd like me to discuss? Well here is your chance. In an email from Barack Obama today, he writes:

"I'll be filing papers today to create a presidential exploratory committee. For the next several weeks, I am going to talk with people from around the country, listening and learning more about the challenges we face as a nation, the opportunities that lie before us, and the role that a presidential campaign might play in bringing our country together. And on February 10th, at the end of these decisions and in my home state of Illinois, I'll share my plans with my friends, neighbors and fellow Americans."

Is changing the rules really a good idea?

According to this story,

"State Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson says he's intrigued by the suggestion to move the 2008 presidential primary to February. The Illinois primary is currently scheduled for March, but House Speaker Michael Madigan would like it moved up to February so that if U.S. Senator Barack Obama runs, he'd get a big home-state win to start." Is this really a good idea? I am in favor of Barack running, but at the same time I don't think changing the game, just to push my position is a good idea. If the motives behind it have a reason for moving the date but what is there? And reportedly, Republican Leader Frank Watson is in favor of moving the date because he feels the presidential primary would help bring more steam to Illinois by being an early primary state. What do you think?

He features such people as Ralph McGeehee and Phil Retinger (both former CIA agents), Rear Admiral Gene La Rocque (Ret. U.S.N.), Theodore Bissell (active in the CIA at the time), Sen. Frank Church and many others.

This is a video from PBS in 1987. Funny how things evolve as you take a look back at history. I just found this facinating, and thought more should watch it. Is it paranoia or reality?

Fox last 24 hour news channel to report on Gerald Ford's death.

I noticed something very interesting and decided to blog it.

Tuesday December 26th, 2006 marked a day in history. Former President Gerald Ford past away. I happen to be laying in bed and surfing the news when I noticed CNN had a "Breaking News Story" banner headlining the story. I then went to MSNBC and FOX's website, and they hadn't displayed anything. I reloaded all three websites and kept hitting refresh. MSNBC was second to the game with a Full Story on their site about the event, and a minute later FOX's website displayed a "Breaking News" banner describing "Former President Ford Dead at 93". This all occurred in about 2 minutes. 11:05p eastern time. Meanwhile FoxNews, and MSNBC and CNN had already broken to live coverage on their news channel's about the event. It wasn't until 11:14p CNN had a full length story on it's website. USAToday had a story pop up but wasn't measuring in . Fox still had the banner. The Ny Times had an article . My local NBC News station KSDK even had an article, while Fox still only had a news banner.

The Chicago Tribune had no story yet. I noticed the St. Louis Post Dispatch had a story. The BBC had a story right on their front page! Nothing on Al-Jazera english's website. The Miami Hearld didn't seem to have anything on their website yet. Fox's banner continue to lagg behind the other news site with the text, "Former President Gerald Ford Dead at 93" until 11:27p CST. Now this is not a scientific study by any means, but I was logging this as it was happening. I found it very interesting that out of the 3 big 24 hour news channel's website, MSNBC was fastest to the punch beating both CNN and FOXNEWS to a full story. I found it interesting my local news channel's website had a front page story and not just a banner but FoxNews's website didn't have a story until 20 minutes later. This makes me think about which sites I want to visit to get caught up on Breaking News Stories. CNN and MSNBC had topped the list being the first to market with their story.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends, and family of The Ford Family!

He's not announced he's running for president, but he has indicated he's considering a possible run. This is coming from a group of people who think Obama should run, and have created the "Draft Obama Committee."

Well they didn't really thank me per se. They thanked HomeTelephone Company for their 100 Years of Providing Service. I worked with the Internet Service Provider section for a brief time. The bill was introuduced this summer, and passed in November.

Parallels Beta Update: Windows and Mac Coherence

The Parallels Team today announced a beta copy of their Desktop Virtualization software for macintosh. The new update allows for the simultanious running of MacOS and Windows side by side. It allows you a start bar, and windows programs to be ran inside the mac os. It really makes working on a computer fun again! Below is a screenshot of me running the MacOS and Internet Explorer 7.

This software is really worth the $50. It makes my Macbook much more exciting to use, as it allows me the freedom to use whatever software I like best, no matter what platform it comes on.

I found this on Digg today. MR. Barack Obama on "The Daily Show." Senator Barack Obama is one of the brightest, and straight forward we have! For once, with this man, I feel as if we have something very different in this man. He speaks of truths, and speaks intelligently. Intelligently, not one of talking points, and political rhetoric, but he speaks passionately with grounded focus on common sense. I hope this man considers running for the Whitehouse in my lifetime! I worked for his campaign of his senator bid from Illinois during my days at EIU in 2004. Please watch this video below, and tell me your thought on this guy.
